French Toast is a classic breakfast dish made by soaking bread in a spiced egg-milk mixture and frying it until golden brown. It’s crispy on the outside, custardy on the inside, and delicious with toppings like maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.
Classic French Toast Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 slices of thick bread (brioche, challah, or French bread work best)
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup (120ml) milk (or half-and-half for extra richness)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp sugar (or honey)
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tbsp butter (for cooking)
**Instructions:**
1. **Whisk the custard** – In a shallow bowl, whisk eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar, and salt.
2. **Soak the bread** – Dip each slice into the mixture, letting it soak for 10-20 seconds per side (don’t oversoak or it may fall apart).
3. **Cook** – Heat butter in a pan over medium heat. Cook each slice for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
4. Serve** – Enjoy warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, berries, or whipped cream!
Tips for Perfect French Toast:
✔ Use stale or slightly dry bread – Fresh bread can get too soggy.
✔ Don’t oversoak– Just enough to coat, but not disintegrate.
✔ Medium-low heat– Prevents burning before the inside cooks.
✔ Keep warm in oven – If making a batch, place cooked slices on a baking sheet in a 200°F (95°C) oven.
Variations:
- Savory – Skip sugar & cinnamon, add herbs & cheese.
- Stuffed – Spread with cream cheese or Nutella before cooking.
- Vegan – Use flax eggs & plant-based milk.
